Our First Griffon - Huntley

In 1999 my husband wanted to get a hunting dog. Even though we already had two house dogs, it doesn't take much convincing for me to get a new puppy, so I started searching the web for a good all around family dog for myself and the kids, and a versatile hunting dog for Jeff. It didn't take long for me to zero in on the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon as our dog of choice.

This web site was a great asset to me: http://www.awpga.com/fr_geta.htm

As these dogs are sometimes hard to find, my next mission was to find a puppy. We had a deposit down on a new litter that was going to be whelped out East. When the bitch had her pups - there were only 2 of them! We were heart broken, to say the least, so my search started once again. This time we were fortunate enough to find a puppy in Kansas that had a great blood line and a long ancestory of AKC Champions. The best part was that these puppies were ready to go - so we had to get ready fast! Having never, ever bought a dog over the internet it was a scary process. We prefer to go see the pups, play with them and then choose - but with only 2 males left to choose from, we studied the photos and listened to the breeder describe their personalities and made a decision.

January, 2000 - Welcome to your new home "Huntley". My husband was on pins and needles waiting at the airport for his new baby to arrive. The flight went smoothly and we brought home our new little guy.

When Jeff was at his local gun club talking about the new puppy, a fellow shooter got all excited about the breed we choose, and introduced us to NAVHDA (North American Versatile Hunting Dogs). http://www.navhada.org/ It wasn't long and we were members, building a training table, and heading north on Wednesday nights for training on birds. It was a great experience to meet new people, see new breeds of dogs, and all the attention that our Griffon got was also a definite plus. We signed up for Huntley's Natural Ability test and worked towards that goal. In September of 2000 it was test day and we were both a bundle of nerves. Huntley did awesome and came home with a Prize II - 105 points. You could not wipe off the grins on our faces!!

Huntley has a great personality and just loves to hunt. Get out a gun in his presence and he can hardly be contained!! He is as dependable in the field as he is out on the water. He is also a great family dog and super loveable!!!
