May 30 - 22 Days and the adventure continues

I've been taking one or two out of the whelping box and letting them roam around a bit so they can explore the big ole' world. Jeff picked up an outdoor pen for them, so weather permitting we can start taking them outside - preferrably to eat for easier clean up!

When I get home from work today they will get their first experience of laping up milk. I mixed it up this morning so it is ready to go.

Jack is in the foreground, Hannah to the right, Leroy is climbing on top of someone and Charlie is just trying to figure out what is going on.

Jack is chewing on Hannah. Jack is the best walker in the group.

Leroy is trying to get over the group to get to me.

Happy Birthday! 3 Weeks Old Today!!

Oh, and we are so excited this morning too. They can hear now and it is so fun to see them start stirring around when someone comes to visit. Last night the neighbor brought over her two kids - age 4 and almost 2. The 4 year old could not believe how much they'd grown and was so excited to see their eyes. Then she went outside to help my husband move sod around. Too cute . . .

When I first went into the pole barn this morning this is what I was greeted with. How can you not love it??

After all that activity - a nap was in order. Can you count how many in this group?

This is Jack - he turned grey the quickest and is also the most steady on his little legs. Well, not here:

I think these guys or gals are quite full:

Nothing new to report today. Just a few photo's that I took before leaving for work again today. It is my way of having them with me I guess.

Hannah likes to cuddle:

LuLu is getting ready to take a short walk:

She walks far enough to plop onto LeRoy and lick his face:

Hope you enjoy! Have a great Wednesday!!

Tuesday, May 27th

I hope everyone had a great Holiday weekend. We were very busy at home getting things done outside . . . with many little breaks to get our puppy fix and see what they were up too. The legs are getting stronger and I know that soon they will all be running around.

It is kind of like wishing for your baby to start walking and then once they do you think "oh goodness - what was I thinking!". In another couple of days I will be introducing them to a milk mixture so they can learn to drink on their own.

Are you lookin' at ME?

This is either Bernie or Charlie. I can only tell for sure when I see the spots on their backs.

While I put new bedding in the whelping box last night, I laid them all on Hailey's blanket. They didn't seem to mind. I then weighed each one and put them back in the box. All but 2 have passed th 4 pound mark now.

This little video will show you how active they are now getting. They remind me of little walruses trying to manuever around.

Friday - May 23

Finally a Holiday Weekend is here! I expect to start seeing a little walking by Monday. Once they get to a standing position and can maneuver a bit, I'll start supplementing Hailey's milk with a milk recipe my vet gave to me. Can't wait to see them make a mess - I'll be sure to have the camera ready. Leroy's eyes are fully open, but hard to see with that dark face of his. The others are open too and I expect they'll all be fully open by the end of today. They I can get some more pictures.

They seem to be more active too and a bit more voices truss. They can't hear themselves yet, but that should be happening this weekend too.

Not sure who this is:

Mom just had a drink of water and is dripping on Leroy while she watches what I'm doing. I think Leroy will be the first to walk - we'll see if I'm right soon enough.

A line of 5 sleepy puppies.

Have a great Friday everyone!!

2 weeks old!! May 22

The eyes are starting to open!! Just little slits and we noticed LeRoy's first. During the weigh-in last night there is a tie for the biggest between LeRoy and the first born girl - both at 3 lbs. 3.5 ounces. I tried doing a couple of one-handed photos this morning - not the greatest photography, but still cute.

This is our Little LuLu - she weighed 2 lbs. 14.5 ounces last night.

This is the first born boy puppy - he weighed in at 2 lbs. 10.5 ounces.

When I went out to let Hailey out one last time this morning, she was too busy:

Hailey continues to be a great mom to her pups and always watchful of them. She does enjoy getting outside and fetching a few sticks too.

Wednesday, May 21st

Well, the eyes are not open yet. Maybe today!! Last night we went out for dinner and I commented that when we get home I need to stress the puppies for the last time. My husband said that this process is stressing HIM. He doesn't like to see them cry. Last night there weren't any cries at all!

First onto the cool kitchen floor.
video

Then onto the warm towels - still hardley a peep - I think they are now used to being on their own for a little while.
video

Before bed, I went out and held each one checking for any sign that the eyes are opening, but no. This morning I snapped a couple more photos . . . of course. They are holding their heads up at times and using thier legs a little more too. I can't wait to see them trying to walk for the first time. I hope it happens during the long Holiday weekend.

Tuesday - May 20th

I can't help but take a picture or two every morning before heading off to work. When things get a little unbearable during the day, all I have to do is open up a photo to make me smile. I don't think I ever took this many pictures of my own girls when they were little!! But, back in the late 1980's we didn't have these nice small digital cameras right at our beck and call.

I think I saw one puppy get up on his/her front legs today, but it happened so quick that maybe I just imagined it. I anxiously await getting home from work to see what has happened . . . . will their eyes be open today? Tomorrow?? Anticipation . . .

12 days old, with a full belly and not a care in the world:

A content threesome:

I know that many of you that are buying a puppy from us check this site regularly and that warms my heart. It is such a satisfying feeling to know that my babies are going to wonderful homes and I have a great feeling about each and every one of you.

There are 2 boys still available . . . . start spreading the news!!

Weekend update

I'm noticing that the pups are starting to hold their heads up a little more and finding out that the front paws might actually become useful some day. Over the weekend we could start seeing a difference in their coats as the hair underneath starts to turn grey. One actually barked yesterday. I expect their eyes and ears will open up in the next day or two. Here they are al spread apart after a good meal.

They seem to be practicing some independence:

When they do sleep together, they seem to like to wedge themselves into a corner. This is Leroy and the Purple yarn girl - our first born.

Ya, I think these two girls are quite comfortable - 11 days old.

You can see the grey hair coming through on this one.

And lastly a little video showing how well they are moving around now.

The Boys

They are all one week old now. We've had lots of company to oooh and aaah over them. The little kids can't wait for them to get big enough to play with. I have a feeling they will be sorry once the jumping and chewing start though. They all will be very well socialized.

The boys are designated by the color yarn I had put on them when first born.

Stressing the Puppies

I read an article quite some time back about a reputable breeder of Griffons over in Wisconsin that came up with a method of "stressing" puppies. When I knew we were going to have a little, I looked it up again and since that time there was an article published about them in the Bird and Dog Retriever News.

It consists of laying the pups on a cool surface for 5 minutes, totally seperate from one another. While they are adjusting to this, towels are placed in the dryer to warm up. They are then placed on the warm towels for 5 minutes, still seperate from each other. Basically it teaches the puppies to accept the environment that they are placed in and adjusting to it. It also eliminates an "alpha" in the litter.

While doing this last night, Hailey was crammed up against the sliding door watching to see that her babies were okay. Big Leroy is in the middle of the pups and he had no problem adjusting.

I used a laundry basket to carry them into the house. They pretty much fill up the basket now and I imagine by the end of the week I'll have to divide them into two baskets, or get a bigger one. You can just see the side of Hailey's ear on the right making sure that all is okay.

The Girls

I believe I've got pictures of the 3 girls here. Tonight I'm going to put pink yarn on each one as it is easy to get them confused. (while laying on their belly of course).

This is the 1st born girl:

More Photo's

I try to keep my camera close by for that quick cute shot! Last night I weighed them all again and they have all doubled in size and then some. When I put them all in the laundry basket to change the bedding, they pretty much filled it up. Come to think of it . . . I should have taken a picture of that! duh!

This little guy was the 2nd boy born. He now weighs 1 pound 4.9 ounces.

This is the first female - actually the very first puppy, born at 3:33 a.m. Starting weight was 13.1 ounces and she is now 1 pound 9.1 ounces.

These two just looked so sweet criss-crossed like that this morning. I'm not sure which two they are, but it really doesn't matter.

5 days old

Last night my daughter came in telling me that she found a puppy that we can call "Hard Hearted Hannah" - call name Hannah because she has what looks like two hearts on her back and when she holds her tail just right that forms a heart shape too.

I love how they just pile on top of one another and sleep. You can see the body of one, but I'm not sure where her head is. Pretty sure that big ol' Leroy is laying on it. As you can tell, the are full, warm and very content.

3 days old

Hailey has been wonderful about taking care of the puppies. When I weigh them each day, she keeps a close eye on what I am doing and keep sniffing the basket even after they are all back in the whelping box. Just making sure I didn't leave one behind. She is good about visitors and let you hold one at a time - with her ever watchful eye on them.

Little boy - the 3rd born. Starting weight was 12.2 ounces and as of last night he wss up to 1 pound 1.2 ounces.

This little guy has won our hearts over and it'll be sad to see him go. We've named him Bad Bad Leroy Brown and the call name Leroy just seems to suit him. He was the biggest boy at 14.2 ounces at birth, and is already up to 1 pound 4.2 ounces.

This little guy has a heart-shaped spot - can you see it?
